Designed for Intermediate learners
Writers often struggle with dialogue that sounds artificial or interchangeable between characters. This workshop addresses voice differentiation, subtext creation, and the balance between realism and narrative efficiency.
The program runs six weeks with intensive writing exercises each session. Students submit dialogue scenes for peer review and instructor analysis. Class discussions examine excerpts from screenplays by Aaron Sorkin, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Quentin Tarantino to identify distinctive approaches to character speech patterns.
Each week introduces specific techniques: establishing voice through word choice, building tension through conversational misdirection, and revealing character through what remains unspoken. Participants practice writing scenes with strict page limits to develop economy in their dialogue construction.
The final assignment requires a complete scene featuring four distinct characters engaged in a single conversation. This exercise tests the ability to maintain individual voices while advancing plot and revealing character dynamics. Students learn to eliminate unnecessary exposition and trust actors to convey meaning beyond words.
